On the 26th of May, 1647, Alse Young (aka Alice Young, aka Achsah Young) became the first recorded person to be executed for witchcraft in the American Colonies. No record exists of the charges or the trial. She might have been a witch, she might have been an Amway sales person. We simply do not know. This, perhaps is why the Windsor, Connecticut town council officially exonerated her by unanimous vote in 2017.
In other May-related mayhem, The Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine on May 7th, 1915, thus precipitating America’s entry into WW1, the Hindenburg erupted into flames on May 6th, 1937, thus creating an awesome cover for Led Zeppelin’s first album, and on May 4th, 1970, the Ohio National Guard opened up on protestors at Kent State University, killing four. On May 18th, 1980, Mount St Helens erupted, killing fifty-seven people.
And if all that hasn’t made May the most chock-fill-o-mayhem months of the year, then there’s this: On May 26th, Peter Cushing was born. On May 27th, Christopher Lee and Vincent Price were born. How many dead bodies can be placed at their feet? How many tortured souls were sent to meet their maker? Could all three of them being born in the same truly deadly month be just a coincidence? Of course it is. Don’t be an idiot. But just in case, watch out for people born in May, and that includes yours truly.
Until next month . . .
